Geolocation 27 – Hacktoria – Walkthrough
This article is related to a series of Geolocation challenges posted on Hacktoria. This article is specific for Geolocation 27. This geolocation challenge is now unavailable on Hackoria. You can still practice this challenge to polish your skills.
The challenge is to geolocate the given image.
The screenshot of the challenge is given below:
Let’s try to solve this challenge.
First try to find clues on a given image of geolocation.
There are multiple things marked which can lead us to the location.
- “Velkommen” sign beard.
- The name written on the ferry is “byferga”.
- “Cycle” sign board.
- Map and other details board.
- Trashcan.
- Rough area along the railing.
- Square tough tile on the ground.
- The name written on the ship is “SAGASUN”
- On the opposite side of the river there are houses.
- Flag Pole.
The houses are situated along the river. This also indicates that the river might be moving within a city. Map indicates that this river might be the route for the ferries and might be used for public transport.
Starting from translating “Velkommen” in English. It is a Danish language word as google translate detected. Its meaning in English is welcome. So it is a welcome board.
Apparently this indicates that the picture is taken from somewhere in Denmark.
Searching about “byferga” revealed that it is a ferry service company in Fredrikstad, Norway.
Before moving forward let’s try to check if the same word exists in Norwegian language or not.
This word “Velkommen” also exists in the Norwegian language. Our guess of Denmark can be accurate.
The Glomma River flows from the city Fredrikstad and these ferries operate between, Vestsiden, Gamlebyen and Gressvik on the river.
The list of ferry stops is mentioned below:
- Vestsiden
- Gamlebyen Brygge
- Isegran Brygge
- Isegaran fergeleie
- Smertu fergeleie
- Sentrum fergeleie
- Vaerste fergeleie
- Gressvik Brygge
Now Switching to Google Earth for confirmation.
Among all of the ferry stops Vestsiden is the similar stop as appeared in the given image.
This street view is different from the given image. The time when this view was recorded they might have removed the area map board. The Velkommen board is also replaced with some other info board.
Rest more than half of the markings are similar. So this is the place from where the picture was taken.
Location: Vestsiden, Fredriksted, Norway.
Here the challenge is completed. Kindly share it if you like. Thank you. See you in the next challenge.

Geolocating Air Base by the Aircraft take off Video
Hi! In this blog we will try to geolocate a fighter aircraft F-16. We will figure out from which air base that aircraft took off in the mentioned small video clip. Distance covered on taxiway. Distance traveled by aircraft on the main runway before it took off. Approximate point on the run way from where the aircraft gets airborne.
The link of the clip is given below:
(Disclaimer: This blog is for educational purposes. All rights of video belong to the respective owner.)
So let’s get started:
In the description of the video there is no information given related to the air base. The only information given is the name of aircraft which is F-16 and its climbed altitude of 10000 ft.
Watching the clip closely reveals the aircraft had taken right turn to get on the runway from taxiway.
From the start of the clip till 0:15 seconds the aircraft was on the taxiway and on 0:16 seconds the aircraft was on the main runway and ready for the takeoff as the pilot said, “Here we go”.
On 0:26 the aircraft pull up and 0:28 seconds aircraft had been airborne.
From 0:28 to 0:41 the aircraft flew at a low altitude of 350 – 450 ft. The aircraft alerted the pilot with “Low altitude” words.
At 0:42 seconds the pilot asks the other one about the readiness for altitude climb with the word “Ready”. At 0:44 aircraft pulled up and started to climb for 10000 ft. This also indicates that the aircraft might be a dual seat version. In the clip there are 3 people talking, one can be from Air Traffic Control and other two are pilots.
At 0:55 we have highest and clearest view of the runway before aircraft performed 180 degree roll.
After 180 degree roll.
In the about section of the YouTube channel there is information of the owner and the disclaimer related to United States Air For (USAF). This also indicates that aircraft belong to the United States Air Force (USAF).
Before jumping to maps try to get maximum info from the clip as much as we can. At the end of the clip before 180 degree roll we got comprehensive view of the air base.
This air base has 2 runways.
There is cross like |X| area on the right side (left side of the pilot) in the clip.
There are 3 ponds around the air force base.
Trees can be seen on the back and right side (left side of the aircraft) in the clip.
Concrete structures and sheds appear on the left side (right side of the pilot) in the clip.
At this point there are multiple clues to distinguish the air base.
I would like to recommend you to hunt for the air base by yourself until you get success or in other cases you don’t get any clue or you are struck in the process. Good Luck!
Welcome Back! There are more than fifty air bases of USAF within the United States. Verifying one by one would be quite overwhelming. In case you are struck here are quick nudges.
- Search about USAF air bases in the mainland USA.
- Search about the air bases on which f- 16 are stationed.
First you filter out the info about air bases then you will filter out the info related to the deployment of the aircraft and compare the air base with the filtered one by using Google Earth.
Here again I would recommend you to stop following the blog for a while and try by yourself.
After multiple hits and trails I found an air base with similar structure. Now moving towards verification.
As now all of the observed points matched it is confirmed that this was the air force base from which the aircraft flew. The air base is Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.
Now let’s find out the distance traveled by the aircraft on the taxiway. In order to find out we have to focus on the first fifteen seconds of the clip.
Focus on the 0:00 to 0:07 duration you will find that aircraft had passed 4 straight marked lines on the ground and 3 highlighted half circles Measuring the distance traveled from 0:00 to 0:15.
The aircraft had traveled 147 ft (45 m) of distance on the taxiway. The distance is measured using the Google Earth measurement tool.
Next is to find the distance covered on the runway before getting airborne. In order to find out we have to focus on the clip from 0:16 to 0:26. Watching closely you will find that aircraft had passed two white markings on the runway and on the second mark aircraft started to pull up.
Aircraft had approximately covered 1000 ft (305 m) distance before airborne.
Image of approximate point of aircraft’s take off is given below.
Name of Location: Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina
Hope so you liked and find this write-up helpful.

Let’s try to solve this challenge.
First try to find clues on a given image of geolocation.
- Image contains an airfield. It can be an airport or just an airfield because if it was a military air station or base it should also have hangers for the military aircrafts.
- There is a large coastal area around the airfield.
- It might be a mountainous area or land is too high from the coast as appeared in image.
Apparently there is no clue or unique point by which we can find any lead. One way is to create a list of airfields and airports which are at coastal areas and hit and trial them one by one which is too exhausting and it will consume a lot of time as leaving it as last resort first try to reverse image search this image see what we can get.
Searching on Bing and Yandex we did not get any leads. Now let’s try it on google.
Apparently on google also we don’t find any similar image from the results on the right panel but there is a button showed up on google related to image source.
Opening the source link showed us all of the results related to ”Norfolk Island”.
Before moving forward let’s verify it using Google Earth.
As attributes of location are exactly the same as in the given image.
Name of Location: Norfolk Island International Airport, Norfolk Island, Australia.

Apparently the view in the given image does not help us in identification of place or at least region etc. Let’s try to do a reverse image search and try to find any hint regarding it.
From the reverse image search we found an image nearly exact of the given image with minor differences.
Open the link of the image to get further info regarding it.
It is showing that image belongs to the Port of Naples but here I found another similar labeled image. Newly found labeled image is directed towards the Edge Port. Try to dig it further.
This image gives tons of info that image is of Port of Civitavecchia Barcelona port with a lot of other details. Let’s try to verify it on Google Earth before moving further.

- There is a baseball banner behind the tree which inform us that this is a baseball stadium.
- There is a little memorial that seems to be related to a baseball player. There is also a big “P” on the right side of statue.
As the statue is the most distinguished one among all of the indication so we are going to reverse image search the monument.
There is one result that appears to be similar of the statue which is highlighted above.
- If you had looked closely, that curve of the statue is similar to the given one.
- Similar fence appearance as in the given image.
- Similar road strips painted as appeared in the given image.
- The Exact same “P” logo appeared on the side of the statue.
- The information written on the statue shows us that this player belongs to both football and baseball and if you remember at the start of the challenge there was a baseball banner, so this confirms that the place is related to baseball.
These 5 points depict that it is almost a similar statue. The picture gives info about the name of the person to whom the statue belongs. Also gives info about him like Miami and Purdue. Miami is the team he played for and Purdue (Purdue University) is the university where he studied. I have tried searching for a Baseball and football stadium named after him but I did not get success.
While searching about the Robert Allen I found another similar picture with more clarity which confirms the similar location attributes.
Reading the text I found out that there are a couple of words which can lead towards location like “Evansville” and “Bosse Field”.

Geolocation 4 – Hacktoria – Walkthrough
This article is related to a series of Geolocation challenges posted on Hacktoria. This article is specific for Geolocation 4.
The challenge is to geolocate the given image.
The screenshot of the challenge is given below:
Let’s try to solve this challenge.
First try to find clues on a given image of geolocation.
As from the picture it is very clear that it might be like a government building or building of high status. There are American flags in front left of the building and there is another flag which is unable to identify and at the center of the roof in front of the doom of the building. The central doom appears to be made of gold. There is a little memorial in front of the building. As the American flags are there around the building it is most probable that the building is located in the USA.
Let’s try to reverse image search.
Almost all of the search results are showing that the building is the Iowa State Capitol.
Let’s try to search for the Iowa state capital and make sure about it.
Search results confirmed that it is the Iowa State Capitol building. As now it is confirmed about the building now let’s try to geolocate this building using Google maps.
If you look at the location closely on the right side of the map there is parking area and there is no memorial in front of the building while on the “State Law Library” side there is a little memorial named “Civil War Mortar” present.
Switch to Street View in Google maps for a more detailed version from the center of the path near most to the Civil War Memorial.
You should have the same view as in the image below. If now then try to rotate the camera of street view.
Zoom this view and you will find out both flag pools of the American and Iowa state flag. In the center there is “Civil War Mortar”.
Then rotate the camera to 180 degree and you will see the below given view and the roof flag can be seen.
As the challenge is successfully completed, let’s try to locate the probable place from which the picture is taken. We need to go back to map satellite view to guess.
These are the 2 points from where a given picture might be captured. Take the street view from the first point.
First place is not the place of the photo taken because the photo includes both of the flags on the ground and from this view flags cannot be included in fact flags are behind of this place so we have to verify it from the second place.
Now try from the second street view.
It is more probable that the image is taken from this place or somewhere near around this place. As from this Civil War Mortar seen and both flags are also seen. Try to zoom the view from this place.
Boom! This given image is taken from somewhere near this place.
Coordinates of Iowa State Capitol: 41.59122709296469, -93.6038046349877
Coordinates of the place of Photo Taken: 41.590311245598855, -93.60812704476382

Unfortunately this text does not give any helpful information, so I searched on Google this keyword and there was third result on which location of this event mentioned.
Next step is to go to “Google Maps” to search about “Meripuistotie” location.
Switch to Street View in “Google Maps” to explore this place more effectively.
This poll is similar to the poll in the given picture. Let’s try to find that parking sign to make sure about this place.
